[CONCEPT] Solving real problems – Part 1

In my most recent blog entry, [Evolution] “Influences of a mobile world” we took a look at how mobile devices are influencing the direction of the ECM market. In the second part we will pick up from here and examine the resulting requirements for ECM software as well as solutions that meet these requirements.

In discussions with customers and partners, we at SAPERION have seen that knowledge workers are repeatedly confronted with the same problems.

In order to describe and help others identify with these problems, we have developed fictional employee profiles. The profiles help us find and develop solutions while encouraging communication and feedback from our customers, salespeople, and marketing specialists.

In this spirit, today I will introduce the profile of Project Manager Stefan P.:

Process on Voice: Process modeling via voice recognition

Here’s an idea that I find particularly innovative. Each year at Signavio Code Camp, participants pursue exciting projects that are designed to further improve the simplicity of process modeling with the Signavio Process Editor.

One of the teams focused on harnessing the power of speech recognition to improve process modeling. Instead of using mouse and keypad to put individual process tasks in order, models can be created by voice. Signavio Process Editor generates the associated model in real time as the user speaks.

This technology is well suited for use with smartphones, iPad and other tablets, but also for speech-based devices like Google Glasses.

Once the process framework has been recorded, the user adds a few SAPERION workflow parameters, deploys the model in the SAPERION Workflow Engine, and then it’s ready to go :-).

The product is still in the prototype phase. But our colleagues at Signavio tell us we can look forward to more progress in this area.

SAPERION in the TOP 10

Information technology research and advisory firm Gartner, Inc. has released a report that examines the performance and market shares of more than eighty global ECM software manufacturers.

SAPERION is pleased to announce that it is the sole European manufacturer represented in the Top 10 of Gartner’s report!

Our strategy of addressing the needs of both medium-sized firms and major customers was, we believe, clearly one reason for these results. Additionally, our OEM partnership with DATEV and our integrations with leading applications like SAP and Microsoft SharePoint and our continuous focus on SaaS solutions are additional reasons for our success.

The complete report is available from Gartner. Reference ID G00233424 (Market Share Analysis: Enterprise Content Management Software, Worldwide, 2011). Unfortunately, we are unable to provide copies of the report due to licensing restrictions.

Does Russian legislation allow destroying the original paper records after digitizing or microfilming?

Read this article in Russian.

Generally speaking, the answer to this question is “No”. Current Russian legislation does not provide for the possibility to satisfy the legal and regulatory retention requirements by preserving electronic or microfilm copies in lieu of original paper records.

It should be noted, however, that since 2009 the Russian legislation is being quickly and radically reformed. Nearly all the previously existing obstacles to electronic recordkeeping in government and in business sectors have been removed. It is quite possible that at some point in the future the lawmakers will consider the possibility to store the digital and/or microfilm copies instead of bulky paper originals.

So far the Russian legislation allows permanent retention of scanned copies and destruction of the originals after scanning for a single type of records – the census questionnaires. Government Decree of July 26, 2010 No. 554 “On approval of storage procedures of forms and other records of National Population Census of 2010″ prescribes permanent preservation of scanned copies of census records and authorizes the destruction of the paper originals after completion of their processing and expiry of one-year retention period after the publication of preliminary census results.

As in many other countries, the judges of the Russian courts have a discretionary power (but not obliged) to admit the copies into evidence instead of the originals (see, for example, (more…)

Does e-mail stand a chance against new forms of communication?

Inspired by a series of articles, YouTube videos, and numerous “expert” discussions, I’d like to take this opportunity to peer into my own crystal ball and predict that we will soon see peak e-mail.

Trends in der KommunikationSource: 10 Things You Must Know about the State of Social Media in 2011

Currently, about 3 billion e-mails are sent every day. Although I was unable to find any precise figures on the ratio of e-mails to instant messages and social media, the accompanying figure (source) reveals a clear trend in favor of new social media applications like Facebook, Google+, and Twitter as well as Wikis and Blogs.

Communication trends

Mr. Kampffmeyer wrote an article in which he described the inherent inconvenience and inefficiency of e-mail as well as the many benefits of (more…)

BPMN 2.0 is interoperable – and SAPERION Workflow goes along for the ride!

In 2009 the OMG (Object Management Group, hoster of the BPMN specification) had announced that they would offer a serialization as part of the new BPMN 2.0. This was the signal for SAPERION to go for it and with this article I want to tell about this story (my first article).

First of all the graphical visualization of SAPERION´s process definition was changed to match  BPMN´s look and feel. And secondly an interface was built to enable importing of BPMN 2.0 diagrams modeled by third party tools. In the summer of 2010 Version 7 of SAPERION ECM Workflow Suite was ready for BPMN 2.0. End of the story? Not quite.

Nothing is better than to have a reference, so we collaborated with a graduate student to do some research. He made a market screening of modeling tool vendors and evaluated three possible partners. Ultimately, we selected Signavio with its Process Editor.

Signavio is a young,  rapidly growing company with a professional tool named Process Editor for documenting and analyzing business processes via web browser technology. They have offered a SaaS version since day-one. Signavio had decided to implement BPMN 2.0 serialization as well. While the prereleases described only thebasic  elements and (more…)

A day in the life… Mobile Business with the iSAPERION App

7:00 am

Energized from breakfast, I bid farewell to my family and head out the door. I’m on my way to an appointment with a partner in order to discuss new features for the SAPERION ECM Suite. My destination is the partner’s office in Leipzig. The previous evening I had used the German Rail’s iPhone app to find a convenient train schedule from Berlin to Leipzig. The maps app even stored the short walk from the train station.

7:45 am

Car is in the parking deck and I am sitting comfortably in the train in front of my second cup of hot coffee. I use this time to take a look at submitted feature articles and user stories with our iSAPERION app. I make a few notes on the documents. Before I know it, the train is pulling into Leipzig.
