Our next wish belongs a simple functionality, but helps again to reduce programming effort and a source of error. Working on business cases there is often the situation that a task is addressed to an organisational unit and somebody takes the task over. The flow goes on, but due to some missing things it may come back to that special task. And to avoid that somebody else needs the setup-time again the former performer should be addressed again to rework the task. To summarize: first time address the task to  a group afterwards to the first performer.

We have solved this with an attribute named remember receiver which is flagged for that special task as shown in the following graphic. (more…)

BPMN example to explane the distribution challenge

Here comes our third wish (first and second one) for the human-centric process behavior missed in BPMN 2.0. In BPMN you can place an human task into a lane, which is named e.g. Sales. During runtime somebody of the organisational unit Sales (attribute = performer) should do the work. In reality there are several possibilities to distribute.

BPMN example for a decision via gateway

In every process there are decision points. Conditions can be proved by the process engine by evaluating formulars defined on conditional sequence flows. So the corresponding parameters must be set within processing the task before (diagramm taken from discussion post of Keith Swenson).

In many cases processes follow complex rules. So the graphical structure of a process may me simple. But to decide who should take over a task can be very different. I will show this behavior on the basis of a typical invoice approval process and how to model it in BPMN.

BPMN allows to use swimlanes to define in which department a task should be processed. So for the invoice approval the process will start in the accounting to register the invoice data in the ERP system. Depending on the amount of money, the cost center and the class of the supplier there may be one, two or in some cases three approval steps (the third approval is not shown in the following diagram to simplify):

SAPERION specific Stencil set in Signavio Process Editor

BPMN 2.0 will be released in then next days of weeks. But we have just some wishes for the next release, may be named 2.1. These wishes are resulting from our early experiences with the interoperability of BPMN 2.0. We have started to import an external process definition based on the XML-based serialisation of BPMN 2.0 into our Workflow System.We see the necessity of linking with an organisational structure model.

The imported processes are modeled with the Signavio Process Editor (a 30 days free trial is available). They are deployed to our Workflow Engine via a web service. A transformer is mapping the BPMN elements and attributes to SAPERION specific ones for execution by our workflow engine. The grafical SAPERION process model is BPMN conform (more…)

Das UBPML Poster

Andreas Leue arbeitet mit seinem Team bei Sphenon schon seit der Jahrtausendwende an Konzepten für die Generierung dynamischerer Anwendungssysteme.  Entwickelt hat sich dabei die UBPML als Modellierungssprache für fachliche als auch IT-technische Geschäftsprozesse, die in einem integrierten Modell konsistent beschrieben werden können. UBPML ist als Ergänzung zu den bewährten Standards UML und BPMN gedacht, um die Spannung zwischen fachlicher Ebene und technischen Details aufzulösen. (more…)

Usually, I am pretty positive about a bunch of people meeting up and deciding about how to make the (software) world a better place. Particularly if this bunch includes me! I was devastated though, to be part of the DLM Forum’s spring meeting this year. Not only did I see my concerns about the future of MoReq2 confirmed, but I had to learn that now we have another bunch of people who are working to make MoReq2010 the RM standard that could (or would, or should? Whatever.). Now, this in itself is not news anymore, as others have brokered information like this to the general public much sooner.

Im Februar 2010 hatte ich das erste Mal über die Konformitätsklassenbildung der BPMN-Elementen im Post Neue BPMN 2.0 unterscheidet Konformitätsklassen berichtet. Ich habe mir nun die Beta-Version der Spezifikation aus dem Mai angeschaut. Hier gibt es nur noch drei Klassen mit einem etwas anderen Schnitt. Im Feburar war der Vorschlag für die Klassennamen noch SIMPLE, DESCRIPTIVE, DoDAF und COMPLETE. Nun heißen sie:

• Analytic
• Common Executable

Björn Meyer-Caspari hat nach 6 Monaten und zuletzt einigen durchnächten Tagen (geschuldet der Agilität in der parallel stattfindenden Programmierung) seine “Freie wissenschaftliche Arbeit zur Erlangung des akademischen Grades Master of Science in Wirtschaftsinformatik (Masterthesis)” mit dem Titel “Konzept zur Integration eines ausgewählten BPMN-Tools in das Enterprise-Content-Management-System SAPERION” im Fachbereich Wirtschaftswissenschaften II der Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin abgegeben, um dann anschließend zur wohlverdienten Erholung nach Ägypten zu starten. Ich war gestern als Novize in Normierungsprozessen auf historischem Boden unterwegs. Besonders mein Physikerherz war bewegt, durfte ich doch im Zentralgebäude der Physikalisch-Technischen Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig auch einen kurzen Blick auf unsere anfassbaren Grundnormen wie z.B. das Meter und das Kilogramm werfen. Gegründet nach Ideen von Karl-Heinrich Schellbach, Werner von Siemens und Hermann von Helmholtz in 1887 Berlin, gingen eine Reihe von Nobelpreisen an Mitarbeiter der PTB. Einige davon hatten nach dem Umzug nach Braunschweig ihren Arbeitsplatz in dem Gebäude,in dem auch die folgende Sitzung stattfand:

(Achtung: herrlicher Bandwurm) 2. Sitzung des  Arbeitskreises (AK=Untergremium) 6 des AA (habe die Bezeichnung hierfür nicht gefunden) Schriftgutverwaltung und Langzeitverfügbarkeit digitaler Informationsobjekte des Normungsausschuss (NA) Bibliotheks- und Dokumentationswesen (NABD) des Deutschen Instituts für Normung e.V. , kurz NA 009-00-15-06 AK oder auch NABD 15 AK 6, getagt hat.

Im Prinzip ist hier also gut zu erkennen, in welcher Ecke die Normung der Inhalte der TR 01325 stattfinden wird: Bei den Bibliothekaren und Dokumentaristen. Also dort, wo üblicherweise die “Endablage” stattfindet. Mal schauen, ob dies dann der endgültige Anspruch sein wird und nicht wie missverständlich beschrieben (siehe Kritik des VOI) und bestimmte Firmen fälschlicherweise (?) nutzen und damit Marketing für die allgemeine Nutzung für sämtliche “vertrauenswürdigen” Speicherungen in der ganzen Welt machen.
