Most of you will have heard something about Business Rule Engine by now, some more, some less. When I talk to people about it, they are usually quite interested, listen to me talking about the general idea, a little about the programming concepts involved and how we plan to make it a future feature of SAPERION. After I stop for a moment to catch my breath, I am usually told the following:”That is all very interesting, what a nice concept, we might see more of that in some future, BUT, why would “I” need a Rule Engine?” After working in this field for over a year now, I have seen a lot of examples (some closer to reality than others), exchanged ideas with other professionals and even had a few of my own.

In this post I would like to share a couple of them with you.

Ich komme gerade von  der Fontys Hogeschool Techniek en Logistiek in Venlo, Holland, wo übrigens mehr deutsche als holländische Studenten lernen, zurück. Ich war dabei, als “unser” Student Alexander Groenewold seine bei uns durchgeführte 4 monatige Praktikumsarbeit vor seinem Hochschuldozenten Jeu M. P.  van Loon verteidigt hat. Wir können Alexander zu 9 von 10 erreichbaren Punkten gratulieren! Er hat einen ähnlichen Vortrag wie bei uns letzte Woche, dieses Mal allerdings in Englisch, sehr flüssig hingelegt.  Nun steht ihm für seine abschließende Bachelor-Arbeit (in Deutschland vergleichbar mit dem Diplom) nichts mehr im Weg.  Der Titel seines Praktikums war “Prototypische Integration einer Rule Engine in SAPERION”.

Ich hatte die Gelegenheit, als einer der Ersten einen Blick in ein neues Buch zur neuen Version 2.0 von BPMN zu werfen (Praxishandbuch BPMN) und kann dieses Buch nur Allen empfehlen, die sich mit dem Thema Geschäftsprozessmodellierung befassen, es direkt zu bestellen. Auch wenn es erst im Januar auf den Markt kommt.

Ich bin einfach nur begeistert über dieses Buch und erachte es  als die kommende “BPM-Bibel”. Mir hatte schon das neue Buch von Bruce Silver zur Version 2.0 der BPMN Spezifikation gefallen, doch das Buch der Autoren Jakob Freund, Bernd Rücker (camunda) und Thomas Henninger (MID) toppt es deutlich. Die mit der BPMN Version 2.0 aufkommende neue Aufbruchstimmung im Markt des Geschäftsprozessmanagements ist in jeder Zeile wahrnehmbar. (more…)

In den letzten beiden Tagen hat sich zum 5. mal die SAPERION Workflow Community zum inzwischen traditionnellen Treffen und Erfahrungsaustausch am Ende eines Jahres in Berlin zusammengefunden. Flankiert von der Vorstellung der aktuellsten und demnächst kommenden Workflow-Funktionen und dem Abschlussgespräch mit Entwicklung und Produktmanagement haben die Workflow-Experten aus Deutschland in Gruppen für sie interessante Themen erarbeitet. Ausgewählt wurden die Themen “Konzept für ein E-Mail Management”, ”Beispiel-Implementierung eines Step-Performers” sowie “Nutzung der Rule Engine Drools”. (more…)

Almost every company has its own set of business rules and processes. This could make even the simple and common task of determining the next receiver of a workflow a complex and in-transparent decision. A frequent occurrence of this problem is for example during invoice processing, where several exceptions and rules usually constrain the procedure and prevent it from leading to the happy path.
In the past, when facing such complex systems of rules, our professional services teams often invented individual scripting solutions. This, however, is very time consuming, error-prone and needs more maintenance, and allows almost no flexibility or simple adaption of company’s business rule and processe changes.
